Changes in Brazil (Brazil, South America) On November 15, 1889 the military leadership of Brazil pressured Pedro II into abdicating. The provisional president of the new Republic of Brazil Manuel Deodoro da Fonsea has assured his people that the new constitution which is being drafted will include the separation of Church and State. He expressed his hope that the constitution would be completed quickly and elections held by the years end. |

Train Tunnel Officials announced the work on the underground electric train tunnels is near completion. When the City and South London railway opens, its tunnels will connect some parts of the city and pass under the river Thames. There is already talk of expanding the Tube system in the near future.

Conference at Troy Heinrick Schliemann has summoned a second conference to vindicate his work at Troy. Prominent personages attending the conference will include Professor C. Waldstein, director of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens; O. Hamdy Bey, director of the Imperial Museum at Constantinople; Dr. Kurt Humann, director of the Berlin Museum; and Dr. W. Grempler of Breslau to name just a few. Schliemann hopes to have his findings and maps of the excavation at Hissarlik to be vindicated and end the increasing criticism of both his and Wilhelm Dorpfields work. |
