BTW- I loved the idea of the K-3PO > droid commander in the the New Republic... I think it was Pablo who > mentioned it the other day. I don't know if anyone has replied to this, but I sent this NPC earlier. It's not exactly a droid, but it is kind of a "droid officer." For those of you have gotten the new Adventure Journal (AJ 15) this'll make sense for those of you that haven't, oh well. Anyways, this's an NPC that may throw your PCs a loop. Template: Shard Jedi Character Name: Maj. QP-3L7 (Cupie), New Republic Army Reserves Species/Model: Shard/Modified Industrial Automaton ASP-12 Droid Sex: None Age: 374 Height: 32 cm. Weight: 4.5 kg Physical Description: Cupie's droid shell is that of a standard ASP-12 with a black, red, and gray camouflage scheme. Cupie's true form is a 32 cm. long, cylindrical , red and black streaked crystal. Background: Cupie began its life as just one shard in a large colony on Orax. When discovered by the Old Republic nearly 70 years ago Cupie was one of the few Shards who chose to separate from the from the cluster to become an ambassador to the Republic. Given an ASP-12 with a modified voice box and armored torso, Cupie decided to leave the true ambassadorial responsibilities to the older shards, and set off to discover the galaxy. So that Cupie would not get itself into trouble (being naive and appearing to be a droid) it was assigned a "master," Verpine Jedi Knight Cheedo Gaerin. It was Cheedo who initially discovered that Cupie was Force-sensitive, then took it upon itself to teach Cupie the rudiments of being a Jedi. Unfortunately Cupie's all-too-rational mind made for slow learning of something that must be taken on faith. The Force did not come easily to Cupie, and it was not until the rise of the Empire, and consequently the death of Cheedo to Darth Vader, that Cupie fully accepted the Force. Finding no other rational choice but to join the Alliance in order to avenge the death of its only non-Shard friend, Cupie began a deep cover assignment as a maintenance droid aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Ordered Pride. Cupie's job was to send any information it overheard to the Alliance with a hidden transmitter. When Jedi Knight Corwin Shelvay and Sullustan Jedi Master Arkanian stole aboard the Ordered Pride for a little Jedi mayhem, Master Arkanian felt the presence of another Jedi aboard and immediately sought it out. And so Cupie ended its stint as spy aboard the Ordered Pride a little earlier than planned. Seeing this as an opportunity to bring two powerful Jedi to the side of the Alliance Cupie found no other rational choice but to take Master Arkanian’s offer of becoming his apprentice. Cupie studied with Shelvay and Master Arkanian it what may have been the most enlightening year of Cupie’s existence. Unfortunately, Cupie was unable to convince Master Arkanian and Shelvay to directly join the Alliance, they preferring to find the remnants of the Jedi Knights in order to fight the Empire. Cupie was forced to split with the two Jedi when Shelvay was captured and brought to Coruscant. Despite its pleading to Master Arkanian to assist in Shelvay’s rescue, Arkanian decided that Cupie was not ready for such a test. After much contemplation after Arkanian left Cupie was forced to rationally agree with the Jedi Master. Cupie then returned to the Alliance and once again was transferred to deep cover, this time aboard High Inquisitor Fremdall’s Skyhook overlooking Coruscant. There Cupie’s cover as a simple maintenance droid allowed him to occasionally tap into the High Inquisitor’s database and erase, or add, certain pieces of information. It was there that Cupie stayed until the taking of Coruscant by the Alliance, when he was finally rejoined with his Alliance, now New Republic. Cupie, now newly promoted from a simple NCO to a full-fledged Lieutenant in the New Republic Army Intell branch, was transferred to their Slicer division as an expert in manipulating Imperial databases. Except for one brief stint examining captured Ssi-ruuvi technology, Cupie labored over records of Imperial installations that were still active in the Deep Core. Cupie weathered in the catacombs of Imperial databases for all of 3 years before the Force began to call incessantly to it. Requesting a much needed vacation Cupie pulled a few strings in Intell and made a call to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and requested to be a student at his Praexeum on Yavin 4. At first Luke turned Cupie down believing it to be a delusional droid (much to C-3PO’s consternation). Not to be turned down with such an irrational decision on the part of Skywalker Cupie took its rather prodigious savings and NR Intell badge and greased a few palms in Supply in order to be sent to Yavin 4 as a replacement maintenance droid. When the supply ship touched down Master Skywalker asked to see the pilot believing that the Force-sensitive presence on the ship would be a new addition to his Praexeum. When the pilot turned out not to be Force-sensitive Cupie walked calmly out of the cargo hold and presented itself to Master Luke as a new student. It took Luke two uses of Sense Force potential and Cupie bringing out its true self before Luke finally welcomed the "droid" into the Academy. And so Cupie began its Jedi training for the third time. Proving to be an incredibly studious pupil Luke was thrilled to find out that Cupie had studied under two other Jedi, and immediately sent Cupie to Tionne for a full recollection and chronicling of the other Jedis’ teaching techniques. Cupie eventually ended his active status in the New Republic Army, with a little recommendation from Master Skywalker, but retained his rank by keeping a reserve status. Cupie’s last act as an active duty officer was to gain access to the New Republic Army’s database to find Corwin Shelvay, whom he referred Master Skywalker to. Personality: A remarkably rational individual Cupie still occasionally finds the Force to be mystifying, which Master Skywalker has many times said is both a good and a bad thing. Ever curious about the outside universe Cupie downloads as much information as possible in a concentrated effort to learn everything. Surprisingly enough Cupie has developed a sense of humor over the years (Cupie is perhaps the only Shard to understand non-Shard humor), and enjoys playing pranks on those who only believe it is just a droid. Objectives: To learn EVERYTHING! To become a Jedi and eventually the Jedi Watcher of Orax, and eventually help the other Shards how important it is to become a member of the New Republic. Skills as well as any other skill that involves computer programming or operation such as astrogation or security (versus computerized locks and devices). Shards can interact directly with comlink-equipped computers using their telecommunications ability. Telecommunications: Shards can emit and receive electromagnetic transmissions as a means of communication. This allows them to detect any operating technological device or droid within 100 meters with an easy Perception roll. Their signals can reach out to about one kilometer individually, but are strong enough to reach anywhere on their home world when the Shard is part of the group-mind. Shard transmissions can be picked up on standard comlinks and other devices tuned to detect them. Shards can also effect droids equipped with restraining bolts as if they had a control wand by making a moderate Technical or droid prog. roll. They have no natural Dexterity or Strength dice. They can learn Dexterity or Strength based skills and use them in conjunction with a droid body, if the body is capable of using that skill. They can only move inside a droid "vehicle" or by being carried by a droid or another creature. In their natural state, Shards have no senses apart from their electromagnetic sense. Fragile: Shards have no Strength attribute and gain only 1D to resist damage in their natural state. A damage result that kills a Shard shatters its body into fragments. Normal medical treatment is ineffective on Shards, they must heal naturally unless they can be returned to Orax to receive treatment in the mineral hot-springs on the planet. Force abilities such as accelerate healing or transfer Force do affect Shards, as they are still living creatures.
