     The Imperial Designs ALFA-P (Ambient Light Focuser And Projector),
unlike traditional blasters, is a true laser.  This means it has a virtually
unlimited range and its beam travels at the speed of light.  However, the
weapon is only in prototype, and there are still a number of serious drawbacks.
    First, the ALFA-P has a low damage rating, since the process of focusing
the light is imperfect.  Secondly, the beam tends to lose power over a
distance.  Finally, the ALFA-P can only fire aprox. 10 shots before needing
more ammo.  This is due to the fact that the crystal used to focus the light
rapidly decays when exposed to such high energy concentrations.  However, it
is hoped that many of these drawbacks can be reduced or eliminated with time
and research.  Already the designers are experimenting with new ways of
focusing the light and with synthesizing new, energy resistant, crystals.
     It is hoped the ALFA-P can eventually be adapted for use on starships.
It's incredible range would give a large advantage in space combat.
