Some missions, such as the famous Battle of Ord Torrenze, were successful while others failed miserably. This is the story about one rescue mission which failed, yet saved millions of lives..... The battered flagship Righteous Fury, one of the new Victory-class SD, orbited around the planet Atraken in the Kattelyn system and waited for the last evacuation ship to take off. Admiral Sefra Constantin paced anxiously on the bridge, contemplating her strategy which some of her officer's thought bordered on suicide; The only logical escape route was blockaded by warships, leaving thousands of unarmed evacuation vessels and the pitiful remains of several Republic squadrons at the mercy of enemy weapons so she planned to take the ships through the uncharted Gree nebula which lay nearby, thereby circumventing the Enemy and making it possible to minimise losses due to enemy action. However, the Gree Nebula was rimward while the escape route was core- ward and with millions of reefuges from this planet adding to previous loads from nearby colonies, supplies were going to be scarce on the long voyage. Most of the onboard troops had been off-loaded to make a final stand together with warships to damaged to escape and a handful of ships who had chosen to stand and fight rather than flee. Hopefully their sacrifice would gain enough time for the evacuation fleet to reach the Nebula. Her dark and gloomy thoughts are interrupted by the Communications Officer who reports that all ships are ready. She straightens her uniform jacket and orders the immense fleet of ships under her command to execute Plan Breakout. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Admiral's Log: It's incredible but this fleet, labeled Exodus Fleet by its war-weary passengers, have somehow made it to safety. A couple of days after entering the Gree Nebula we entered a strange solar system, and to our surprise did our sensors indicate that some of the planets obviously had been inhabited in some period in the past since there were huge buildings and strange objects scattered all over the place. We were in a hurry, since the Enemy was pursuing us, and had no time to stay and gather information. The Fleet was in a tight wedge formation and was preparing the jump to hyperspace when all hell broke loose; every ship experienced a strange phenomena which made instruments crazy and caused discomfort to most people, it was like falling down a tunnel filled with strange lights and weird hallucinations. Anyway, after some minutes, the fleet reentered normal space but it was many light-years from our previous position and the Exodus Fleet were in a planet-system which featured immense relics from some ancient race unknown to the Republic. Close review of our sensor logs revealed the presence of some large artificial objects in the path of the Fleet and in the last moments before the strange phenomena took place, a tremendous power build-up was recorded in these objects and the final sensor scan before the so-called "jump" showed the opening of a form of artificial worm-hole. Attempts to go back using this unique form of travel has been fruitless, since there are no objects in this system with the same properties as the ones encountered in the previous system. However, there are several artifacts with unknown purpose, and one which obviously has been a form of gigantic space station and perhaps control center for something which seems to have been a much smaller version of the "Jump-Gate" we accidentaly triggered. The main problem is that we do not know how to operate the thing and the scientists on the Fleet quarrel among themselves over the reasons. We decided to name the system Gateway and are now trying to plot a safe route through uncharted space back to the our own lines. However, I have serious doubts about our capability to travel the distances required and have discretly dispatched scout vessels to search for a suitable colony site. Admiral's Log, Supplemental: We have made contact with a civilization wich have a lower technology level than the Republic but they do have a primitive form of hyperdrive. They call themselves "The Terran Federation" and are of base-line human stock. We have briefed them of our background and they are willing to integrate us into their society if we will help them understand our technology. After a formal vote on the Exodus Fleet, whether to accept or decline, a majority accepted and we are now en-route to a colonizable system which the Terrans call Formalhaut. The others search for planets of their own to colonize and one group is even making an attempt to reach Known Space, may the Force be with them. I am hopeful that we can survive with the help of the Terran Federation and we are already preparing ourselves to defend against any threat, may it be the Enemy or something unknown. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Report To: Naval High Command, Coruscant From: Rear Admiral Viik Shallnas, Task Force Beta It is my sad duty to report that findings in the Kattelyn System, which was the last reported position of Admiral Sefra Constantin's rescue fleet, indicates that she and all people and ships under her command has perished in battle against the Enemy. The main planet in the system, Atraken, has been totally devastated and large amount of debris from wrecked starships litter the system. No survivors have been located and it is my recommendation that travel to this system is restricted due to the danger of unexploded space mines and wreckage from destroyed spaceships. Furthermore, the planets in this system has no viable ecosystems and can no longer support life. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Note 1: The Battle of Ord Torrenze is mentioned in the background history of the Corellian Corvette Farstar of the Darkstryder Campaign Box. Note 2: The ship Righteous Fury and Admiral Sefra Constantin is taken from the Renegade Legion game made by FASA. Note 3: The Gree Nebula, or to be correct the Gree race and its history and technology which I have used can be found in SWAJ #8. Note 4: The planet Atraken in the Kattelyn system is from the SW Planets Collection p194. To be continued.... Urban Lundqvist
