They have recently reintroduced thier SG-17 projectile "shotgun", after nearly a century. A good, solid design that has been proven over the centuries in it's most basic form, the SG-17 uses a gas blowback system that helps to retard the significant recoil of this mighty weapon. Using hefty 18.5x70mm shells, the SG-17 feeds from a seven round box magazine, and can be used with a great selection of ammunition. When asked by Men at Arms why the SG-17 is returning to production, SurvivaTec responded: "The Empire and local goverments are regulating blasters out of the reach of the average citizen. In the meantime, street crime is on the rise, creating a need for protection by the common citizen. While a little too big to be carrying around town, the SG-17 is very well suited for shop and home security, along with meat hunting and sport shooting. For worlds that have forced the citizenry into owning a limited number of weapons, the SG-17 is capable of handling almost any shooting need at a relatively low cost." There is no doubt about it- the SG-17 can handle almost anything. Over the past four months, I've been borrowing one for evalution. The detachable box magazine is a real plus, as it allowed me to swap between ammunition types in a second. The fine shot loads were found to be just the thing for hunting small game and birds for the camp pot, while the heavier shot load was just the ticket for large game hunting in close country. For home defense, it would be the prefered load, based off an incident we had. While on Bothawui, I was ambushed by a Skar'kla. The heavy shot load caught the beast in the chest, and flung it back about a meter and a half, with a plate sized hole clean through it. That is one dead piece of meat. The saboted slugs are little more than the bullets for their SR-14 rifle and SC-14 carbine, encased in a plasitc hull that falls away when it leaves the muzzle. Due to the design on the hull, the bullet has a spin added to it, makeing a SG-17 the equal to the SC-14. That came in handy for some long range shots against bandits in the hills of Tatooine. I don't know who they were, but the SG-17 was producing one-shot kills out to 300m, well past my blaster carbine armed comrades. The flare rounds proved useful for illuminating the area around our camp that night and signaling the air shuttle that the nearest moisture farm sent out in answer to our distress calls, allowing us to evacuate our wounded guide. In Mos Eisley awaiting my ride home, one of the old timers in a cantina showed me a nastly little modification to make to the shells, that he called a "ring shot", that causes the shot to stay within a capsule of case metal as a solid slug, which then opens up insdie of your target. When he showed me how it worked, the resulting round reduced a stray womp rat to a bag packed full of red mush that used to be internal organs. SurvivaTec DOES NOT recommend this, nor will their warrenty cover any damage to the weapon or shooter that results from this. Nor will they accept these modified cases. But it makes one hell of a mess. From a more technical point of view, the SG-17 is a fast pointing, light weight, versatile piece of equipment. The furnature is the standerd, black synthetic compound. It actually is meant to be sighted in two ways: there is a notch sight to the rear of the barrel, with a self-luminecent bead inserted into the front blade. Using the bead alone is the fastest and best way to acquire fast moving and airborne targets, while the bead and notch together provide an effective, if somewhat rustic sight picture. The sample we had had only one failure to fire, and five failures eject or feed, in over five thousand rounds of ammunition. These last were all caused by lack of cleaning during prolonged shooting sessions, while the failure to fire impacted the primer with insufficent force to ignite it at first, but a second pull of the trigger worked just fine. The metal is covered in a hard, grey-black composite finish that should prove to be resistant to all but the strongest acids, and eliminates the need for internal lubrication. The use of the explosive propellent does mean that it kicks harder and speaks louder than the partical-acclerant technology of the common blaster, but it was not overly uncomfortable. Actually, it reminded you that you are using a very powerful weapon, and gave our test users reasurance that it would be effective against whatever they might be shooting at. The shells were ejected forcefully to the right, moving well clear of the weapon as the action fed the next shell into the firing chamber. The magazine release in located directly infront of the trigger gaurd, and is ambidexterous in nature, allowing most shooters to conviently eject the magazines with thier trigger digit. The mechanical safety is located IN the trigger gaurd itself, allowing the shooter to snap it off in a heartbeat if needed. Of all our testers, only a Aqaulish had difficulty. Everyone else on our staff who tested it enjoyed it emensly, and a few even asked to buy it off of the company. They are going to have to wait, as I am now the proud owner of out test gun. While larger than a E-11, it is not to large to be used in most urban dwellings and carried in most land and airspeeders, so it should fulfill the origional intents of the manufacturer well. While more expensive than most blasters to feed, it should be noted that the metal shell cases can be traded in at any authorised SurvivaTec dealer at a rate of 1cr off the cost of a box of shells per case turned in. SurvivaTec also intends to market the equipment and components to reload these hulls in the near future, pending Imperial approval. For these reasons, it should be popular with folks living on the frontier and on worlds were energy weapon permits are scarcer than bantha fangs. There is even a rumor that the Imperial Storm Legions are evaluating the SG-17 and it's brother SR-14 for use in hard radiation zones. This has been Maj.
