The GAT-12j, modified to allow for two passengers, was released in the weeks prior to "the Rebellion's first major victory against the Empire." After the Empire rejected Sienar's offer of several thousand GAT-12j blastboats, the company offered its ships to the private market. Pirates and privateers alike pounced on the GAT-12j, buying up Sienar's entire 4,000 ship stock in less than a month. Soon the GAT-12j was preying regularly on freighters and luxury liners. Since the GAT-12j had no ion cannons with which to disable a ship, death tolls began to mount as ruthless pirates pumped torpedoes and missiles into captured liners, destroying all evidence. A popular tactic was to use the GAT-12j as a boarding vessel. After sending in starfighters equipped with ion cannons to disable the engine systems, the Skiprays could then nestle up against the hull and slice through. The two boarding troopers on board could easily neutralize any threat, and if necessary, the Skipray's gunners could follow up on the shipboard assault. Although the GAT-12j lacks the three ion cannons that were prominent on the GAT-12h, its small passenger space more than makes up for this lack of firepower, and it also adds an element of diversity never before seen in the Skipray line. No longer confined to mere system patrol duty, the Skipray GAT-12j is now seen as an armed escort ship for transporting dignitaries and officers. Truly the GAT-12j is a welcome expansion to the Skipray line.
