Roche Systems, Inc., became the largest Verpine starship manufacturer. It came into the spotlight with a bang after introducing the RY-76 Jackal Heavy Assault Boat. It proved that heavy weaponry on a starfighter-class vessel did not necessarily mean the vessel had to be slow and unmaneuverable. However, due to price and demand, the New Republic chose to purchase only a token force of these craft, and as a result many Jackals found their way into private fleets. The Jackal HAB packs a heavy punch for a fighter its size. Recent technology advances gives it some of the most efficient weapons systems available for its size. It has room for two occupants, usually a pilot and a gunner. The pilot flies the Jackal, and has the option of controlling the two forward-facing double laser cannons and single SW-7b ion cannon. The gunner has a twin blaster cannon at his disposal, mounted on a rotating turret, as well as the aforementioned weaponry. The twin blaster cannon is doubly useful, since it is able to function as a space weapon and a anti-vehicle weapon. This gives the Jackal the firepower needed to escort landing craft and dropships to planets from cruisers and still be able to neutralize ground defenses. The Jackal carries no projectile tubes, but it can be modified to carry concussion missiles in place of the ion cannon. The two double laser cannons have their own separate power generators, which can be rerouted to draw or supply power to the shields as needed. The ion cannon is linked to the Astron DD-1 generator that powers the twin blaster cannon in the gunnery station. A Nevar & Bilch sensor array fills the nose of the HAB, right above the ion cannon. A secondary package is mounted in the gunner's station and draws off the same window as the frontal array. To have good shields requires a large shield generator. And a combat-class hull is large and bulky, so most starfighter have a mix of the two. The Jackal HAB has a relatively thin hull, but its systems are built in cryocooled modules. Each module is surrounded by combat-class armor. The cockpit and gunnery stations are both fully armored and, if the need should arise, can be sealed off into separate airtight modules themselves. Since these modules are cryocooled, it is then possible for them to function in a vacuum. This means that if the ship's hull is compromised, the systems should be unaffected, in theory. While this makes maintenance quite difficult, it also makes the ships extremely tough and durable. The Jackal HAB also has a Feryn class-2 shield generator located just below the gunnery station. It is a small generator, but it provides adequate shielding. Typically, it can protect the vessel from most blaster fire, and usually fails after several relentless laser blasts or a turbolaser barrage. Two Glycol KB-8d5 ion engines provide considerable sublight thrust, allowing the assault boat to reach nearly the speed of a TIE fighter. The real power of the Jackal is in its maneuverability. The two maneuvering fins that protrude near the rear ion engine and the Harveck spacefoil allow high speed turns and let the HAB perform maneuvers that would tear apart a Y-wing. In atmospheric flight it can out fly even the best airspeeders. The current mission profile of the Jackal HAB for the New Republic does not take advantage of all of its options, however. It is called for as a fighter-bomber, to be escorted into and out of battle by X-wings and often supplemented by B-wings. It is also used to raid supply stations and transport convoys. There was only one instance where it was used on escort duty, and it was learned that, for all its good qualities, the Jackal was not an escort fighter. Forced to stay near its escorts, the Jackals could not take advantage of their speed and maneuverability, and were torn to pieces by TIE fighters and a Lancer-class frigate.
