Various approaches to a Martial Arts specialized skill. -----------------------------------8<-------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 11 Aug 1995 12:36:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Matt Stanley Subject: Martial Arts... OK- Here's an idea. Have martial arts be a collection of "sub-skills", like Force Powers, that you pay for separately and use your skill rating to accomplish. I suggest each of these require a successful brawling attack first (to set up the technique)Here's some example maneuvers- Throw- (Difficulty: Moderate) A successful throw action means the character's opponent has been thrown 1-2 meters, landing in a nasty manner, causing 4D damage. On an especially good roll, the victim can be thrown wherever the thrower wants (such as into another person) Control-(Diff: Mod) This includes joint locks and chokes, and a successful roll has the victim in a painful hold. The victim may act, but only with a -2D penalty. The martial artist may inflict up to 4D damage per turn, without a new attack roll. Takedown-(Diff:Easy) This technique utilizes off balancing so the opponent is knocked down with a minimum of damage. The victim lands at the character's feet and is stunned for 2 rounds. Pin-(Diff:Mod) After a victim has been thrown, taken down, or held(as above) a pin may be attempted. A pinned victim may attempt no actions so long as the pin is maintained. Vital Points-(Diff:Hard) With knowledge of pressure points the martial artist may knock out or cripple his opponent with a light touch. After a successful roll, the character may choose his opponent to be Stunned, Wounded or Incapacitated _without_ a STR roll by either party. Iron Shirt-(Diff:Very Hard) By focusing his internal energy, a character may withstand tremendous blows without damage. A successful use of this technique allows a +3D to STR for resisting physical attacks. Whaddaya think? I could easil come up with a dozen or so of these, if people are interested. Lemme know. matt -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Matt Stanley, just another scripture thumping hack from Galilee ms018c@uhura.cc.rochester.edu -----------------------------------8<-------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 06 Nov 1995 12:12:04 -0500 (EST) From: Scott Sutherland Subject: Martial arts Well, now that I'm not so busy, I was able to do a little work on my idea for the Martial arts advanced skill...this is rough, but let me know what you think. (A) Martial Arts (require 5D in Brawling) Use vs non-Martial arts user Brawling + Martial arts code is divided, at player's discretion, between defense(dodge/parry), offense(attack), and damage. This is decided at the beginning of each round, and it remains static for that round. The divided code is then added to the appropriate skills when used in combat. If a skill isn't used(such as dodge) then the code put towards that skill is lost for the round. Martial artist gains 1 free action per round, in hth combat only. User can perform any two actions in a round with no penalty, 3 actions is -1D, etc. Use vs Martial arts user to follow... scott -----------------------------------8<-------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 06 Nov 1995 13:01:49 -0500 (EST) From: Scott Sutherland Subject: Re: Martial arts Okay, here is the second part... vs. Martial arts user this may be lame, but I just figured they could make opposed rolls. Both make opposed martial arts rolls, and damage is done according to the following table: beats opponent's roll by effect 0-5 No effect 6-10 Stunned 11-15 Wounded 16-20 Incapacitated 21-30 Mort. Wounded 31+ Killed This does go fast, but it also sacrifices the "flashiness" of martial arts. At the moment, I can't really think of any modifiers. Needs : Brawling at 5D (and Brawling Parry at 5D) The MA skill die can be splitted to increase damage. All attacks are physical - use correct armour value. MA skill is a Dexterity skill - use dexterity penalties. To learn/increase an advanced skill you need a teacher ! Attack Type Damage Punch Str+MA Kick Str+MA Stun Str+MA (Stun) Hold Str+MA Throw Str+MA Feint +difference to next attack Defence Type Damage Dodge none Parry -MA to Damage Parry (Melee) -MA to Damage (use only MA skill die) To Hit: Use Brawling skill and add (splitted) MA skill die. To Damage: Use Strength and add (splitted) MA skill die. Attacks: Punch: Different attacks using hands. Roll vs Brawling Parry to hit and vs Strength to damage. Kick: Different attacks using foot/leg. Roll vs Brawling parry to hit and vs Strength to damage. Stun: Different attacks on special points on body. Needs Alien Species roll to know exact points to hit, does stun damage only. Hold: Different attacks grabbing and holding. Roll vs Brawling Parry to grab and vs Strength to retain grip. Can be used for strangulation - extra Hold attack in same round making Strength + (splitted) MA damage. Throw: Different attacks throwing adversary. Roll vs Brawling Parry to hit and vs Strength to damage. Feint: Different techniques making it easier to attack. Roll vs Brawling Parry add difference to next attack to-hit roll. Dodge: Avoid being hit by adversary. Roll vs Brawling. Parry: Reduce damage by catching the blow with arm or leg reducing damage. Roll vs Brawling to parry add (splitted) MA skill die to Strength. Melee Parry: Special MA skill use (splitted) MA skill only to parry a Melee- weapon attack. Add (splitted) MA skill die to Strength roll. Example: PC with Strength 3D,Brawling and Brawling parry at 5D and MA skill at 2D is attacking a NPC with Strength 3D,Brawling and Brawling Parry 4D. The PC uses a kick and uses 1D MA to hit, the PC rolls 6D vs 4D to hit and 4D vs 3D to damage. Example: PC and NPC as above NPC is attacking with a punch PC desides to dodge the to hit roll is 4D vs 7D. Example: PC and NPC as above PC is doing a multiple attack with a feint, a kick and a punch, he puts 1D MA to the feint roll rolling 4D vs 2D (3 actions reducing skills by 2D) he then adds 1D MA to the kick damage rolling 3D+the feint difference vs 2D to hit and 4D vs 3D to damage, the punch is rolled with 3D vs 2D to hit and 3D vs 3D to damage. Example: The PC Martial Arts Master is being attacked by a NPC using a sword (Str+1D damage), The MA Master has 10D MA skill and 3D Strength. The NPC has 3D Strength and 5D Melee Combat skill. when the NPC attacks the PC he rolls 5D vs 7D to hit and if the PC succseeds in the parry the damage is rolled with 4D vs 6D (Str+3D) if the PC fails the damage is rolled with 4D vs 3D.
