A small R2 unit stood amongst the deserted ruins of a base. It's antenna span round frantically as it searched for someone. The base was situated in a jungle on a very rarely visited planet of Mykre. The droid spotted his target and started to roll towards him, whistling a greeting as it went. "Any Luck ?" said Luke. A rather negative bleep came from R2. Luke repressed a sigh and looked about Talon Karrde's deserted base. This was the one place in the known galaxy that Luke was limited. It was also, the only logical place that Mara Jade would use to hide from the emperor, when he'd been resurrected. If the Emperor didn't know she was alive, then he wouldn't have come looking for her. What puzzled Luke is the problems with the Emperor had finished, finally, just over a year ago, but had been no word from her. Mykre was special to Luke, if only for the reason that the force could not be called apon. Small Animals called Yamisari, live in the forest. Each of these creatures creates a force bubble of around ten metres in diameter. However when there are a number of these creatures, the bubbles reinforce one another and a larger bubble is created. During Thawn`s campain against the new republic, these creatures were used extensively against himself, Mad Jedi clone Ch'broath and also to create a huge army, in conjunction with cloning technology. Luke grimaced that these harmless creatures could be exploited in such a way to seem dangerous. He had looked around the camp twice, but only small animals had taken up residence in the moss covered structures. Mara had run when she had first got an impression that the emperor was still alive. He would have demanded that she become the Emperor's Hand again and Luke knew that Mara liked her freedom too much for that. The problem lay in the fact that since the Emperor couldn't finder her using the force, he didn't stand much chance using the same methods. He turned round and started to walk back towards his X wing. He had to think of another way to track Mara down. He glanced up at his X-wing and then at Artoo. He realised that he was going to have help his little droid in his socket without using the force. This was yet another reminder that here he was a normal human being. He gave a little sigh and looked back at Artoo. "I guess I'll have to get you in there the hard way." He said to Artoo while pointing at the X wing. The little droid bleeped in resignation and started to wheel his way back to the x wing. It just felt so right that she would be here, Luke mused over the problem. Luke walked round the X wing just checking for damage and small areas of repair, that needed doing. "Artoo, Are there any components that are unique to a z-95 Headhunter ?" The little droid seem to be taken back by the question and thought. Finally he bleeped a negative. "Just a thought !" said Luke, "Right then, we've got to get you up in your socket." Both Luke and Artoo made their way to the front of the x wing. Luke pressed a small button on the nose cone and the front landing skid wined as it contracted, letting the nose sink until it was almost touching the ground. "Now the difficult part !" he muttered he bent down and picked Artoo up and slowly began to lift him onto the nose cone. Artoo kept still as his master slowly lifted him, on to the nose cone. Luke almost had put him onto the nose cone when he heard a tapping sound coming down from his waist. He looked down to see his lightsabre softly banging against the nose cone of the xwing and then it struck him. "Her Lightsabre." He said as his hand went to his Lightsabre. However he forgot about Artoo who, without the support of Luke`s other hand, fell off the nose cone and onto Luke. The both fell to the floor into a undignified heap on the floor. Luke looked up at the small droid, who was beeping and making a lot of distictly rude noises. He rolled the little droid off him and lay on his back looking up at the sky. He couldn't help it, he laughed. He laughed out loud and it felt so good. Artoo managed to get himself onto his feet and trundled over to his master. Every time Luke looked up at Artoo, he burst out laughing even louder. The droid looked down at him, probably wondering what had caused his master to short circuit. After a couple of minutes Luke had calmed down enough to sit up straight, his shoulders still quivered as he tried to repress the giggles. Artoo Bleeped. "Yes, OK. I'm Sorry." He said, pausing for breath, " We must have looked so funny." Artoo didn't seem to have the same opinion. He trundled to the X wing's nose and waited. Luke stared at him. "Artoo, I wasn't laughing at you." said Luke, "Oh I Don't know." With That Luke lifted him up onto the X wing's nose and watched him wheel his way to the droid socket at the back He pressed the button back and the X wing straightened up. Luke climbed into the cockpit. "Artoo, I would like you to recalibrate the scanners." The droid bleeped an affirmative and asked what he was scanning for. Luke told him. Forty minutes later, the X wing touched down in a small clearing on the other side of the planet. He jumped out of the cockpit and looked around. In a corner, there was a Headhunter, hidden under a lot of camouflage netting, a small treehouse up in one of the trees and a small power generator on the ground next to the tree. Artoo got out of his droid socket and got to the nose cone. Luke helped him down and they both looked about. Apart from all the quiet noises from the jungle, there wasn't any sound from the encampment. "Maybe no-one's home !" He said and climbed the up the tree to the tree house. It was very well constructed, solid and didn't sway in the tree. He ventured inside. There was only one room with a single light hanging from the ceiling. On a petite desk, there was a small computer terminal which had a wire connected to something outside. In the corner was a home made bed. It almost looked cosy. Next to the bed on top of a small table was what he was looking for. His Father's old Lightsabre. If it wasn't for the fact he knew the exact frequencies of the crystal inside it, he wouldn't have stood a chance of tracking this down. He walked over and picked it up. Examined it from end to end, smiled and put it back. She'd taken good care of it. "Is there anything I can do, or are you just looking ?" Luke span round to face the voice. Mara Jade was looking at him intently, whilst holding her blaster was levelled at his chest. Luke was marched out of the tree house and towards his X wing. He could see Artoo was stood by it, unable to move thanks to a restraining bolt. "This is familiar." He said, with a slight smile, "Reminds me of old times ?" "I'm just wanting to make sure of something, and if I'm right I'll kill you where you stand" "What ?" He dropped his smile, "What's happened to you ?" "I think that's the other way round." She said and walked him up to his X wing. "OK that's far enough, you can turn round now ?" she said. Luke turned round and looked about. Mara was sat on a tree trunk five metres away from him with her blaster still leveled at him. "OK. You have five minutes to explain to me why your here and what the Emperor's up too ?" "The Emperor's dead !" He said, "He thought he could regenerate in another clone but we stopped him." Mara nodded and gestured with her blaster for him to continue. " The Emperor's forces fled to the rim and we started mopping up again until Trake appeared." The was a slight reaction to the name but she didn't lower the blaster. Luke decided to try the open approach. " I don't know what's happened to you but I need your help, the republic needs you help." "Last I heard, you weren't with the Alliance anymore." Said Mara, "And I'm still not sure about things." Luke sighed. She was referring to his biggest mistake. In an attempt to destroy the resurrected Emperor, he'd taken up the offer of becoming the Emperor's new right hand man. He intended using the dark side to destroy his enemy. It nearly cost him everything. If it wasn't for his family, then ... Luke shuddered at the thought. "Mara. I got out. It look everybody to get me out but we made it. If I was still with the Emperor, do you think I would come alone ?" The blaster was no longer aimed at his chest. Mara just looked at him. "No, you would have just told him the location and a couple of star destroyers would have turned up. " Luke let out the breath he was holding, he turned to Artoo and deactivated the restraining bolt. He couldn't pick up Mara's sense because of the Yamasair effect, but he didn't need to. He could tell how she was feeling by looking at her. Her red hair had lightened and the green eyes continued to examine him from where she stood. The tension in her shoulders was obvious. She didn't trust him but was giving him the benefit of the doubt. "Do you ever get tired of the honest farm boy approach ?" she asked. "No." replied Luke, "It's the only approach that I know." "I don't know if I'm ready to leave here." She said and turned back to the hut. Luke stared after her and then looked down at Artoo. "Could you prep the ship? I've got to sort this out !" She was sat on her bed looking at the computer terminal when Luke walked in. He sat down across from her and waited. She looked up at him and sighed. It seemed to Luke that she had been almost enjoying her solitude and didn't want to leave. "You underestimated him didn't you ?" she said, Luke nodded. "Who paid for that mistake ? " "I did." Luke replied, "I really shouldn't have been supprised. There wasn't a depth he would sink to, to get what he wanted. I forgot how cunning he was. " "You forgot your lesson to me didn't you ?" Mara looked up from her computer. Luke seemed puzzled by that. "Don't underestimate the dark side." She continued. "I know. Leia reminded me when it was all over. I still feel things about what happened. Maybe he did survive again but it's going to be long time until we hear from him again. What happened to you ?" " I ran." She replied, " As soon as I felt him looking for me I ran. He never knew about Mykre so I hid here. How did you find me ?" " You have my father's old lightsabre, I could detect the crystal's frequency." " I didn't realise that you had bugged me ?" " I didn't realise ...." started Luke, but then he noticed that she was smiling. "I'm only joking. Your too honest to have someone bugged." "Will you help ? " asked Luke. "Trake right ? Well I don't know much. Him and Vader didn't get on. He was good. He could have been a threat to The Emperor but since he didn't make a move against him, I assumed that the Emperor had something big over him. His loyalty was never questioned." She lent over and picked up her lightsabre. She put her blaster down. Mara stood up and stared at Luke intently. "It will take a couple of hour to pack, if your willing to help." Luke nodded.
